Imagine that your child was forced to completely change their place of residence and education, and they do not understand the language spoken by those around them. This is the situation faced by children from Ukraine, each of whom reacts differently to such drastic changes in life.
In the context of forced migration and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, many Ukrainian children have found themselves having to not only adapt to a new life abroad and continue their education in an unfamiliar language but also maintain a connection with their native culture and language. Many of them, alongside attending Czech schools, consider it important to continue and complete their education according to the Ukrainian curriculum.
Kyiv Lyceum Green Apple and the Multicultural center in Brno have been successfully implementing educational programs in Brno for more than two years, providing Ukrainian children with the opportunity not only to continue their studies but also to feel safe. We create a warm and cozy atmosphere, similar to that of a family, where each child finds a space for personal and educational growth.
Support and adaptation through collaboration
In cooperation with the Multicultural Center Brusinka, the team of the Brno branch of Green Apple Lyceum helps children continue their studies according to the Ukrainian school curriculum while preserving important cultural and linguistic elements. We are proud to create an environment where children can gain knowledge, develop, and discover their talents in a new setting without losing their connection to their native culture.
Educational programs with a focus on the future
Students in grades 5–11 at our center prepare for the ZNO (NMT) exams in key school subjects and also study the Czech language up to the B2 level, which helps them adapt more easily to life in the Czech Republic.
For high school students (grades 10–11), we offer 20 hours of weekly lessons in key subjects according to the Ukrainian curriculum, as well as assistance with mastering the curriculum for further education at universities. Students in lower grades (grades 5–8) attend lessons according to a flexible schedule in the afternoons, which makes it easier to combine both Czech and Ukrainian educational programs. Our goal is to provide children with confidence in their future, regardless of their plans—whether continuing their studies in Ukraine or enrolling in European universities.
Cultural initiatives for well-rounded development
In addition to academic programs, Green Apple Lyceum and the Multicultural Center Brusinka regularly organize cultural events such as workshops, excursions, museum visits, and holiday celebrations. These activities promote not only the social adaptation of children but also their integration into the cultural environment of the Czech Republic. Children and youth need to feel like part of a new community while retaining their national identity.
Our achievements and a look into the future
Over two and a half years of work, our center has become a second home for dozens of Ukrainian children in Brno, who find support in our staff and teachers. We are inspired by how our students overcome challenges, develop their abilities, and become confident young people. It is important to us that each of them feels understood and knows they are not alone on their journey. We are guided by our knowledge of working with bilingual and foreign children, experience in managing international projects, multicultural approach, knowledge of the history and culture of various countries, and, of course, friendliness and humanity.
We continue to develop our educational and cultural initiatives, striving to create an environment where every child can unlock their potential. We take great pleasure in creating a cozy space in Brno where children feel comfortable, learn, communicate, and grow.
Collaboration and support for mutual success
Our work has received official recognition from the Brno City Magistrate, the ANNO Association, and the European Network of Cultural Centers (ENCC). We are grateful for the support and continue to expand our programs so that even more Ukrainian children can find a safe place for learning and development.
We invite all interested parties to cooperate and will be grateful for any support. In the future, we plan to expand our program to make it accessible to as many Ukrainian students in the Czech Republic as possible.
